QANTAS ONE MILLION SEATS SALE

We don’t think we’ve ever seen a sale quite like this one.

Here are THREE reasons why:

  1. Flexibility boosted with unlimited flight date changes until at least January 2022 (!)
  2. One million seats on sale from $99 one-way to 55 destinations
  3. Complimentary beer and wine in Economy

We told you it was good.

FARES ARE ON SALE until 15 February for travel from Mid-March 2021.

“We’re thrilled by the built-in flexibility of unlimited date changes until at least January 2022,” says The Travel Authority Group’s CEO, Peter Hosper.

[Customers could previously only make one flight change, for travel until the end of June.]

“Knowing that flexibility is part of your Qantas airfare will be a great source of confidence for our clients. Now more than ever before, prospective travellers need that confidence. We hope more airlines follow suit,” adds Hosper.

The flight date can be changed to any available for sale at the time (up to 355 days in advance). Qantas will waive the change fee (a fare difference may apply).

Qantas Group Chief Customer Officer, Stephanie Tully, said with international borders closed, the best way to drive tourism is by making it even easier for Australians to explore their own backyard.

“As the national carrier, we have an important role to play in helping the industry recover from COVID-19, and we know that given the right opportunity, people are keen to travel,” Ms Tully said.

PREMIUM SERVICE

This month, Qantas is also making further improvements to inflight food and beverage options in line with its premium full-service offering. This includes:

  • Complimentary beer and wine for Economy passengers will continue to be available daily across domestic and regional flights (previously available for purchase on certain flights).
  • New hot meal options in Economy, ranging from gourmet beef pies and roast vegetable quiches to beef and mushroom ragout and roasted chicken with tomato, garlic and lemon sauce.
  • Qantas is the only domestic airline offering a full meal service including at breakfast and dinner, including key capital city routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. This will be rolled out to shorter flights in March.

The airline has also advised us that it has reopened the vast majority of its 35 Qantas Club and Business Lounges across Australia, and its Chairmans Lounges.

As part of the Helloworld Travel group, we are delighted to advise that our American Express Membership Rewards relationship has been extended right through until December 2025!

Remember the days when all of those miles or points you had in your loyalty program account(s) were easily exchanged for glorious flights, cruises and adventures in far flung places?

We do, too.

The last year hasn’t been kind to the points-for-long-haul-holidays crowd. We’re sure it’s been great for the points-for-wine-and-appliances mob, but for travellers? Not so much.

We want to do something about that.

Sure, we can’t do much about the long-haul situation, but we can’t see any reason why those American Express Membership Rewards points of yours shouldn’t be exchanged for stunning, luxurious local travel experiences.

Here are some simple ‘swaps’ to get you thinking:

Or simply swap Harvey Norman with Hervey Bay.

You get the picture.

While we all wait for the world to re-open, remember—there’s a world of brilliant, luxurious local travel experiences right on your doorstep. So, treat yourself to that suite-suite upgrade, to that super-luxe rental car, or to that local hideaway that you otherwise might have overlooked for Aspen or Bali or Maui.

Reward yourself with travel.

Give us Marramarra Lodge over Myer, the Great Ocean Road over Gourmet Traveller, Bedarra Island over Bunnings, or Hayman Island over Hoyts any day of the week.

And remember, when you use your points to pay for travel booked with the Travel Authority Group, you’ll have access to exclusive hotel programs with early check-in, late check outs, and high-value value-adds as the icing on the pay-with-points cake.

ETIHAD AMONG FIRST TO LAUNCH IATA TRAVEL PASS

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced a partnership to launch the IATA Travel Pass.

The IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app to help passengers manage their travel in line with government requirements for COVID-19 tests or vaccines. Initially being offered to Etihad’s passengers in the first quarter of 2021 on selected flights from Abu Dhabi, if successful, it will be extended to other destinations on the airline’s network.

“COVID-19 tests and vaccinations will be key to get the world flying again. A high priority for Etihad is for our guests to have an easy, secure and efficient way to identify and verify their information. Being one of the first airlines globally working with IATA as a pioneer partner on the IATA Travel Pass is a big step forward for Etihad’s guests and for the industry,” said Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operating Officer, Etihad Aviation Group.

The Pass will enable travellers to create a ‘digital passport’ to receive COVID test results and verify they are eligible to undertake their journey. Importantly, it will keep passengers in control of their data and facilitate the sharing of their test with airlines and authorities for travel.

It will also make it convenient for passengers to manage travel documentation throughout their journey.

“We applaud Etihad’s efforts around standardising passenger wellness and campaigning for a united regulatory response to restore confidence in flying and give governments the confidence to re-open borders,” said The Travel Authority Group’s CEO, Peter Hosper.

A COVID-ENHANCEMENT FOR AUSTRALIA’S NEW DPD?

Australia’s new Digital Passenger Declaration (DPD)—due later this year—might be getting a COVID upgrade.

Discussing the return of international students recently, Education Minister Alan Tudge said that digital vaccine certificates could provide a pathway into Australian universities without a need for quarantine.

The proposal relies on finding a way to link verified COVID-19 vaccine certificates to the federal government’s new digitised system for incoming passenger cards that the Travel Authority reported on last year.

The federal government has been looking very carefully at the concept of a ‘vaccination passport’, given some countries are already rolling out COVID-19 vaccines.

“We—and our clients—are encouraged by these initiatives,” says The Travel Authority Group’s CEO, Peter Hosper.

“The travel industry is stuck in a holding pattern just waiting for the green light for people to travel safely again. There is so much pent-up demand. We encourage more innovative thinking like this as the global economy needs people travelling once again,” Hosper added.

Mr Tudge stressed that numerous preconditions would need to be satisfied before any such scheme could be considered, including availability of an effective vaccine.

“If a vaccine works and stops the spread, and it can be rolled out effectively in source countries and we can have surety over vaccination certificates, then there is the potential to be able to bring in more international students without them having to quarantine,” Mr Tudge told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

“In part, that would be facilitated by the fact that we’re digitising the incoming passenger card. Our aspiration is that we would then be able to electronically staple an authenticated, biometrically connected vaccination certification to that card,” the Minister added.

SILKAIR IS NOW SINGAPORE AIRLINES

For more than 30 years, SilkAir was the full-service, regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines operating single-aisle narrow-body aircraft to more than 40 destinations in Asia Pacific, including Cairns and Darwin.

But from 28 January 2021, SilkAir commenced its integration into Singapore Airlines – part of a planned merger announced in 2018.

“Whilst we’re sad to see the demise of the well-like SilkAir brand and offering, we’re sure our clients will welcome the airline’s rebirth as Singapore Airlines,” says Sarah Bush, Co-Founder & Director of The Travel Authority Group.

As a part of the carrier’s wide-ranging business transformation, the move is aimed at maximizing revenue by streamlining brands and standing out from the crowded low-cost carrier market.

“We do believe that with the merger, and with the single-brand, it will make it much easier for customers to understand [that both SilkAir and Singapore Airlines] belong to the same organization,” Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Goh Choon Phong said when the merger was announced in 2018.

SilkAir’s 9 Boeing 737-800 aircraft will progressively join the Singapore Airlines fleet with fresh Singapore Airlines livery, newly upholstered seats, and cabin crew dressed in Singapore Airlines’ iconic sarong kebaya.

Passengers can look forward to in-flight meals created by Singapore Airlines team of chefs, and the airline’s Book the Cook service will also be available on selected flights when travelling in Business Class.

Singapore Airlines’ 737-800 aircraft feature 12 Business Class seats with an 8″ recline, and 150 Economy Class seats.
